about

Lament for the Death of James Moray of Abercairney (Niel Gow) / Miss Marianne Oliphant (Robert Macintosh) / The Auld Reel / Mr John Angus' Reel (Wm Marshall)
--Ed had the honor of playing this set on Niel Gow's own violin at Blair
Castle, as part of his annual walking/music trip in the Scottish Highlands called ‘‘Niel Gow's Scotland.'' The Lament was written in 1777 for a benefactor of Gow's and played for Robert Burns ten
years later. Red Rob Macintosh taught fiddle to Gow's son Nathaniel. The
‘‘Auld Reel'' is played in Scotland and Cape Breton; the Irish version is ‘‘Paddy on the Turnpike.'' Marshall was one of Gow's favorite composers, and with good reason.
